Patchwork Chore Coat
Quilted Chore Coat Workshop Presented by Kristin Slagle
Thursday and Friday, July 16-17, 2026
Trunk Show (Thursday)- Sew Much Fun: How I Create Original Quilted Jackets
As a lover of all things patchwork and quilted, Kristin found the perfect vehicle for her creativity when she made her first quilted jacket from a panel in 2022. Since then, she has created and fabricated dozens of quilted patchwork jackets, plus skirts, hats, chairs and more. Her trunk show will show you that she has yet to find a fabric too weird for a project.
Workshop (Thursday afternoon and all day Friday):
Design a Quilted Jacket (Patchwork Chore Coat)
This workshop will encourage you to get creative and design a quilted jacket that’s unique and fun using panels, vintage and orphan quilt blocks, plus novelty fabrics and other textiles. In the workshop we’ll make a muslin pattern and design and sew the panels needed to make a quilted jacket. Participants will need to purchase a digital download (approx $20 on Etsy)* of the pattern in order to have instructions to finish the coat after the workshop.
Additional Notes from Kristin:
MORE Workshop Info from Kristin:
Here's some information if people have questions about the class. It's maybe more detailed than a simple flyer would need but I'm the kind of person who wants all the info...
This class is all about creativity! In this class we will be designing and constructing panels for the jacket front, back, sleeves, pockets, and collar. I will also demonstrate the steps in construction of the jacket so you will have an idea of how it goes together. You will need to plan to quilt, cut out and construct the jacket after the class. The pattern has instructions and Patchwork and Poodles designer has a video tutorial that you can purchase and watch but this is an easy pattern and you’ll likely not need it.
Depending on the size you’re making, you’ll need approximately 8-9 yards total of fabric for the jacket and lining. 4 yards (2 each) for sleeves, 2 yards for the back, 2-ish yards for collar, pockets and fronts. It doesn’t have to be 8 yards of continuous fabric, and I’ve pieced wonderful linings from 10-inch squares. You can make the jacket with as many or few patch pieces as you’d like. Please! I urge you not to just head to the store and buy all new fabric for this project unless you have to. Raid your stash for panels, vintage linens, cheater prints, orphan blocks and fabric you’ve been saving for some unknown project. *
If all your stash is more than 10 years old, then do go and pick up about a yard of new fabric in fat quarters or fat eighths. New fabric brings a unique freshness to that old fabric and makes it sing. Vintage fabric and linens make a more interesting jacket than all-new fabric from one designer. While you’re digging, find something ugly and bring it. An ugly fabric or block is a wonderful opportunity to create something really interesting. Or you can put it on the share table, and we’ll see who can be really creative with it!
Class Supplies:
Approx 4-5 yards of fabric for front/top (+ you’ll need the same amount for the back/lining and you may want to bring that along for reference). See above for suggestions. Approximate panel sizes are: Fronts 20 x 30, Back 30 x 30, Sleeves 25 x 30.
Shears or scissors
Rulers, rotary cutter, mat
Sewing machine, thread, etc.
Muslin for tracing the pattern, about 2.5 yards. Hobby Lobby puts it on sale for $2.79/yd.
Suggestions: The New Quick and Easy Block Tool by C&T Publishing. I use this book in almost every jacket I have made. You can also check your supplies for simple applique or block instructions.
* Or shop the Common Threads huge fabric sale June 10th and 11th…..
Over 3000 yards to choose from, lots of panels and quilt cheater prints - $4 per yard!
The Patchwork & Poodles Chore Coat pattern is included in the workshop registration fee.

Additional Notes from Kristin:
- Workshop participants can expect to bring the following: sewing machine, basic cutting and sewing supplies, (scissors, rotary cutter, mats, irons, etc) and the equivalent of approximately 4.5 yards of fabric.
- I expect to bring along a basket of kits containing the equivalent of 4.5 yards fabric, vintage textiles and panels that participants may purchase at cost in case there are people who don’t have a fabric stash. I would expect these kits to be $55 each or less. I will figure out how to provide a more detailed list with photos of what I’m bringing kit-wise so that participants can decide whether to purchase a kit, go shopping or raid their stash. By the first week of July, I will provide a list of the specific supplies bring to class so that they will have time to gather up or purchase what they’ll need.
