Update 2:
7 Guild members went with MJ Kinman to the SEQTM to see the Quilt Nihon Exhibit after the Guild Meeting. We had a wonderful time eating lunch together and then enjoying the exhibit.
13 people signed up to take her workshop. It was a wonderful, fun, informative, thought provoking, (for some) quilting outside of your box good time. Towards the later afternoon, she blended in a sneak peak on her other lectures that was so interesting.

UPDATE 1:
The week is finally here!
Common Threads Quilters Guild is looking forward to hosting MJ Kinman for both her lecture and workshop this week.
As a reminder, MJ’s program (including her lecture and trunk show) is scheduled for Thursday, May 16. The guild meeting starts at 10:00 AM. MJ will also have some of her merchandise available for sale at the guild meeting.
For those who signed up for The Bite-Size Gems workshop, it will start promptly at 9:00 AM on Friday, May 17. Please plan to arrive a little early to get settled in and to set up your work area. You will not be using your sewing machine in the morning so MJ will have you set up your machines after the lunch break.
Please bring a snack or lunch with you. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch. We do have a refrigerator available at the church and will have bottled water available during class.
There are no changes to the supply list you received earlier. As communicated earlier, there is no need for you to bring the Bic White Out Correction Tape. We have purchased some for you to use during class.
One question I have received is whether fabric should be washed. MJ does recommend you wash and iron your fabric ahead of the class.
Both the Thursday program and the Friday class will be held at Mills Chapel Baptist Church located at 85 Country Club Rd in Newnan, GA.

MJ Kinman will show you how to create sparkling gem blocks using the design and piecing techniques she relies on to create her giant gemstone quilts. During this fast-paced class, students will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light. Freezer paper piecing techniques are powerful techniques that can transform any quiltmaker’s ideas into reality. MJ’s inspiration is gemstones, but yours might be landscapes, florals, portraits, abstracts, or any other kind of inspiration. MJ is quick to point out that this technique is NOT foundation paper piecing. There’s no sewing to paper or tearing paper out of the back of your quilt block when finished. Instead, this is traditional piecing using freezer paper as your templates. If you can put two pieces of fabric right sides together with a quarter-inch seam allowance, you can do this!

Over the course of a single day-long session, students will learn how to:
• Create a freezer paper pattern based on a mock-up of a bite-size gem that I provide. • Understand how different types of fabrics impact the flow of light and color across their design. • Assemble the fabric facets to create their own block of faceted color. Activities include: • Prepare square freezer paper template (recommended size: 18”). • Transfer the mock-up design to the freezer paper by using a simple grid technique. • Create a color palette. • Code the facets in their template to designate position, color, and adjacency. • Cut apart their freezer paper template and sort by color code. • Iron freezer paper facets to their painted fabric according to the color codes. • Cut the facets and organize them by section code. • Learn techniques to piece facets. Length of Workshop: 6 hours Skill Level: Confident Beginner |
