"Blue Onion" Workshop - May 22
Presented by Mary Ruth Hudson
No tears when you cut the blue onion! Seriously, this is a fun project that introduces you to sewing gentle curves without stress. Mind you there are some guardrails so be fearless and tackle those curves. My sample was done with a fabric collection from Zen Chic which leans a bit modern and eclectic, but the fabrics you choose will significantly influence the outcome of your quilt. No right or wrong, but consideration is important. Stripes and checks can be distorted (in alignment –
i.e. your stripe fabric once sewn may look crooked}. If that bee
gets in your bonnet think twice on those choices. Huge prints can work but you’ll be getting slices and won’t see the whole elements. The more contrast in fabrics the more the pieces will stand out. If you want some subtlety, varying tints and shades can add dimension without hard lines. Think scale, texture, value and perhaps a theme to channel your imagination. Yardage is good but this is also a great way to use up those fat quarters. This is where shopping your stash can be fun!
Fabric Options:
Fabric (for blocks) – a total of 36 rectangles measuring 12 ½”x14” Recommend a minimum of 12 individual prints to ensure variety
You can repeat a fabric, just not too many times or it will overpower your quilt. Remember the rule of 12 mentioned above.
Yardage: 3/8 yard of 12 fabrics. This is calculating 42” of usable width of fabric (WOF). A 12 ½” strip is cut WOF and then sub cut to three (3) 14” pieces
Cost: $75 Members $95 Non-members
Includes pattern and Creative Grids "Ovals Always Ruler"
