Summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime…How do you add music notes here? Schools are letting out. People are planning vacations. Air conditioners, pools, beaches, some place cooler, visiting family, traveling abroad, a cruise. Where are you going this summer? What do you like to work on during the summer? While traveling, do you do any hand sewing? For the past year I have been working on hand quilting a whole cloth, throw size quilt, and I have worked on it in the car a few times. I will finish it eventually…
Even though summer is vacation time for many, we still have things happening, and hope you will be able to join us. There is lots of news to share. Here is a look at what is coming!
May 20 – Jan Cunningham from Tiny Stitches
June 24 - Penny Wilmingham & Jeanne Lowery
July 22 – Ruth Ann Yak – Quilt Artist
August 26 – Guild Birthday Party
Thursday Sewcials – We meet every Thursday, from 10 – 2, at Mills Chapel Baptist Church in Newnan. Bring a lunch and join us. You can work on whatever you like – sewing, hand stitching, cross stitching, crocheting, etc., or try your hand at something new! On the second Thursday of every month we work on Compassion for our homeless veterans or for the Newnan Pregnancy Center.
Please note, there will be no Thursday Sewcial on May 30th or June 6th due to VBS scheduling at the church.
Also, please note that our next Compassion sewing Thursday is an important one for us. We will meet Thursday, June 13th at the church from 10am – 2pm. Board members from Coweta EMC Trust will be visiting us in consideration of our grant. Let’s show them what we do!
Saturday Sewcial for May 18, 2019 has been cancelled. We will also be breaking from Saturday Sewcials for the months of June, July and August. We will begin fresh in September. If there is something in particular that you would like us to put on the schedule, please let us know!
Kiwanis Coweta County Fair
The fair this year will be held on September 19 – 29, 2019. The fair books are not out yet, so I am not sure of entry dates, but I hope you all are considering entering a quilt. Quilts are handled with respect. We have soooo much talent in our guild, and you all do such beautiful work. Let’s participate and let people know we are here.
Christmas Fair Market
The Christmas Fair will be here before we know it. Please bring your items for the Christmas Market to the guild meetings to be collected. Linda Burns is managing our items.
Lastly, it is the time of year we are looking to fill positions on our board and standing committees. We are very fortunate to have most of our current board and committee members remaining in position for the next term. We are, however, looking to fill a couple of positions. We are looking for a Vice President of Programs; this is a revolving two-year position that is voted on. We are also looking to fill the committee position for Saturday Sewcial, which is a volunteer position. Please consider accepting and participating in one of these positions.
We are putting together a Nominating Committee to make some phone calls to see who would be interested. We do need one more person but, so far, we have Sharon Hendrix and Andrea Thompson. So, look to hear from them soon!

Sewing for Compassion Quilts
Come join us as we sew our compassion quilts
Our guild continues to reach out to our community with compassion sewing and quilts. We are working on quilts for the Vets at Fort MacPherson and the Pregnancy Center as well as burp cloths. We are also in the process of making weighted quilts for children and youth. Compassion Sewing happens every 2nd Thursday of the month and twice a year at our Saturday Sewcials. It is our hope that we see each member on one of these special days. You can bring your sewing machine if you would like but we always need people to iron and cut. We also welcome guests. Hope to see you on one of these days!
