March 18 - Saturday Sewcial:
Making a Mondo Bag with Hetty

Picture

Material needed to make the Mondo Bag.

You have 2 options.

The first one is to buy the Quiltsmart pattern for the bag. This contains the pattern and the fusible grid. These are available at Scarlet threads for 2 sizes medium and large. Or any other quit store. Give them a call first.

2nd option is to buy grid fusible at Jo-Anns which is one inch squares if not buy plain thin fusible and you can make your own grid.
You need enough to do 4 panels measuring 12 x 36. Leftovers will be used for the handles.

You need 212- 2 1/2 inch squares.
1 1/4 yard of lining for bag and handles
1 1/4 yard of fusible fleece.

Sewing machine and supplies  and a pressing cloth if you have one and something for lunch.

Are you ready for an exciting new Block of the Month?  It's here!

2016 -2017 Block of the Month

All the information and directions for the BOM patterns can be found on the Common Threads Quilters Guild web site under the Block of the Month Page.  You can download the patterns by clicking on the documents. Making any size quilt is an option too. There will be a total of 12 blocks but you don’t have to do them all.

The blocks and directions will be shown at each guild meeting. Additional instructions and alternate ways to make half-square triangles and flying geese will be demonstrated at some of the meetings.

The first 2 blocks will be presented in September and two more in October. Eight more blocks will be presented in January through April. There will be a total of 12 blocks. Each will finish as a 12” block (12 ½” unfinished). Use a ¼” seam allowance. The challenge is to have the quilt finished by June, 2017.

Approximate yardage for a consistent background in a “planned quilt” will require 3 - 3 ½ yards of fabric. A suggestion would be to use a fabric collection. The coordinating fabrics would need 1 yard cuts. We used 6 blenders in different patterns/colors.

A scrappy quilt will use less yardage - depending on your “stash!”

As an incentive to get lots of participation, you may make an extra patriotic block from a monthly pattern. Turn that completed 12 ½” block in at a guild meeting. Please use only red, white and blue fabrics. You may win a fat quarter at our Vet Block drawing! Hopefully, we’ll have enough blocks to make a Veteran’s quilt.

These blocks are for all skill levels and work well together.

Additional help is available from Sandy Thomas at 678-358-7881 or JoAnn Schrepfer at 770-969-5728. Join other quilters at Mills Chapel Baptist Church on Thursdays from 10:00 - 2:00 with your questions!
                                     Have fun!!

Elisabeth Frolet – ‘Nunquam Cede –
 Never Give Up’

Elisabeth will do a presentation about her journey as a quilter, who started in France in the mid-80’s. She will talk about French traditions that are close to quilting as we know it in the US. Because Crazy quilting is her speciality, Elisabeth will talk about it and then finish with Baltimore which is now her new interest and how she includes embroidery in it. Elisabeth will also try to show how 10 embroidery stitches only can help you create endless combinations. A slide presentation will be included. You may contact Elisabeth at:

November Craft Fair

At the last Guild meeting it was decided that next year instead of an Opportunity Quilt Raffle, we would participate in the Newnan Craft Fair held in November.  It is the hope of the Guild that everyone contributes homemade items to sell at the booth.  Items should be brought to each guild meeting so others can view the variety and we can get an idea of the types of items everyone is making.  The proceeds from this event will be used to fund speakers, materials, and Guild activities throughout the year. We hope you will all help to make this a successful event. This
